Decontextualization.

It all starts from a word, a single character. Then, just as cell becomes tissue and tissue becomes organ, word becomes phrase and then poem.
Organic tissue arranges itself through genetic instructions contained within each cell; self-organizing morphogenesis. Cellular automata systems, on the other hand, replicate this operation somewhat in the digital world: each digital cell contains instructions that determine its state based on what is around it. The surrounding neighborhood of cells continues this process over and over until the system achieves homeostasis. In this work, a single character-cell begins to self-replicate by grabbing onto other words contained within an original poem. Each cell has a definite end point (a definite character), yet the emergence of complex outcomes and randomness lies in the interplay between the orchestrated genetic instruction and homeostatic feedback loops. The system continues to update itself unceasingly, trying to reach the target shape–the original poem.
Meanwhile, Google Translate is trying to piece together the intact or broken phrases of a single line, attempting to interpret the poem from one natural language to another, generating creative prose en route based on its tragic rules. Or isn't it just Google Translate’s reading of poetry?
Like a rough and uneven ground, natural language is not as rigorous and clear as the smooth, ice-like formal language of code; instead, it has a certain degree of ambiguity and complexity that leads to endless possibilities of diverse interpretations, which makes us, as Wittgenstein suggested, "able to walk on." Translating from formal language to natural language is a process that this project keeps on trying, creating, and recreating over and over again.
In Decontextualization, poetry appears as an autonomous programmable sequence represented by language, and neither grammatical nor logical rules determine its meaning, utterance, and expression.
